On July 16, 1251 at Aylesford in Kent, England, according to tradition, Our Lady appeared to Saint Simon
Stock, a Carmelite monk, promising that whoever wore her “habit” devoutly would be assured of
eternal salvation. Her “habit” is the Brown Scapular, two pieces of cloth joined by strings and worn over
the shoulders, a miniature element of the Carmelite habit. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia,
“Whoever, therefore, even though he now be a sinner, wears the badge [scapular] of the Mother of God
throughout life as her faithful servant, not presumptuously relying on the scapular as on a miraculous
amulet, but trustfully confiding in the power and goodness of Mary, may securely hope that Mary will
through her powerful and motherly intercession procure for him [her] all the necessary graces for true
conversion and for perseverance in good.”
